Joint Pain Treatment

Joint pain or arthralgia refers to any aches, discomfort or soreness within the joints of your body.  Joint pain can be the result of an injury affecting any of the joints structures, including the ligaments, tendons, cartilage, bursae or bones.  It can also be a feature of inflammation within the joint such as arthritis, an infection or other illnesses such as influenza.  The pain associated with joint inflammation or injury can range from mild, in which discomfort occurs only after activity, to severe, where even the smallest amount of movement may cause extreme pain and discomfort. Therefore, the joint pain causes limited movement and effects your ability to complete an activity.

Common joint pain symptoms and signs include:

  • Heat
  • Inflammation
  • Redness over the joint
  • Stiffness
  • Weakness

Arthritis is one of the most common chronic causes of ongoing pain and often includes multiple joints. Two main forms of arthritis are rheumatic and osteoarthritis.  Rheumatic arthritis causes inflammation (swelling) and pain, which can change and debilitate the joint over time.  This is due to the body’s immune system attacking the tissue that lines the joint.  Pain experienced with osteoarthritis is a result of a breakdown in the cartilage, which cushions and becomes a shock absorber for the joints.

The practitioners at Spinal and Sports Care assess and treat a variety of pain and dysfunction of a joint.  Treatment is dependent on the findings within an assessment.  There are a variety of modalities used to reduce and eliminate the pain experienced, improve the movement in your joint, stabilise and strengthen surrounding structures which allows you to return to activities you once enjoyed.
